While Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models are widely-expected to receive a camera upgrade to 48 megapixels, they could still have a smaller sensor than the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, says a new rumor posted on Weibo.
The claim comes from Weibo user “Digital Chat Station,” a Weibo user responsible for multiple details about the camera technology of upcoming iPhone models.
The user claims that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will retain the same 1/1.28-inch 48-megapixel sensor as the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
There have been reports from multiple sources, such as industry analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu, that the two standard iPhone 15 models will receive a camera upgrade to 48 megapixels, which will put them on par with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
According to Digital Chat Station, while the non-Pro models will be upgraded to 48 megapixels, the two standard models will continue to have a smaller stacked CMOS image sensor (CIS) than the Pro models at 1/1.5 inches.
Since the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus both sport a 12-megapixel sensor that is 1/1.9 inches in size, the standard iPhone 15 models could boast a 27% larger sensor, which, while a substantial increase, will still not be equal to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro models.
A larger image sensor results in improved image quality, as it captures more light, leading to greater detail and less noise, this is especially true in low-light conditions, while also providing a wider dynamic range and improved color accuracy.
