Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman says Apple is working on a new external monitor for the Mac that also acts as a sort of smart home display when not in use. Gurman’s comments came in his most recent Power On newsletter.
Gurman says Apple is developing multiple new monitor models. In addition to replacements for its current Studio Display and Pro Display XDR, there is another monitor that could boast smart standby features powered by an onboard iOS chip.
This would not be the first time Apple has used its Apple silicon in an external display, as Apple includes an A13 chip in its current 27-inch Studio Display, which controls camera and speaker features, as well as spatial audio.
The monitor functionality could use an expanded version of the new Standby feature that debuted in the iOS 17 beta, which allows an iPhone to act as a home hub with full-screen widgets while charging in a horizontal position.
Gurman says we should not expect a monitor release until 2024 “at the earliest.”
