Apple Reportedly Tells Suppliers it Wants ‘Bezel-less’ OLED iPhone Displays

Apple has told its suppliers that it wants them to develop “bezel-less” OLED display panels for future iPhone models, says a report from The Elec.

The report says Apple has asked LG Display and Samsung to develop new OLED display panels, which could be implemented without changing the iPhone’s current design, as opposed to the curved displays used on some smartphones that sport ultra-slim bezels. Apple reportedly is reluctant to implement a display that curves over the side of the ‌iPhone‌ due to concerns about optical distortion and durability.

The bezel area of the screen houses components such as the antenna and the protective encapsulation on the screen also makes it very difficult to make screens with absolutely no bezel.

The project will take years as Samsung Display and LG Display will need to bend the circuits under the bezel area. They will also need to secure enough area for the antenna that can function without interruption.

The encapsulation will need to become even thinner while the under panel camera area must also blend perfectly with the rest of the screen for the perfect visual effect.

But Cupertino ultimately wants a zero-bezel OLED panel to be housed on its iconic iPhone design, where the sides are completely angular next to the screen, sources said.

The upcoming ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max models, expected to debut this September, are expected to have the thinnest bezels of any smartphone so far, at just 1.55mm.
