Apple Releases iOS 16.6 and iPadOS 16.6 With Bug Fixes and Security Updates – Patches Exploited Vulnerabilities

Apple on Monday released iOS 16.6 and iPadOS 16.6, the sixth major updates to the iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 operating systems. The new version comes a bit more than one month after the public release of iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5.

iOS 16.6 and iPadOS 16.6 can be downloaded on compatible iPhones and iPads, respectively, over the air by going to “Settings” -> “General” -> “Software Update.” Downloads could be slow, due to high demand. However, keep in mind that due to the security fixes in the update mean you should update as soon as possible.

Apple’s release notes for the update, say it includes unspecified bug fixes and security improvements.

A report from MacRumors says the update includes several fixes for kernel vulnerabilities, including one that could allow an app to modify a sensitive kernel state. The updates also fix a WebKit vulnerability that Apple says could have been actively exploited. However, Apple first addressed this issue with the iOS 16.5.1 (c) and ‌macOS Ventura‌ 13.4.1 (c) Rapid Security Responses, so some ‌users may have already had installed protection from this issue.

This is likely one of the last updates we’ll see to both iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, as Apple is expected to unveil iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
