ScreenTimes‘ Sigmund Judge has tweeted that the Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” is being shot in 3D to make the most of the immersive cinematic experience afforded by Apple’s Vision Pro mixed-reality headset.
Monarch is a live-action Godzilla and Titans TV series that is set in Legendary’s Monsterverse universe. The Monsterverse is a fictional universe that includes multiple movies, including “Godzilla,” “Kong: Skull Island,” and “Godzilla vs. Kong.”
Judge says the series has been shooting in a three-dimensional format that is supported by Apple’s newly announced headset. Judge’s information comes from conversations with “people familiar with its production.”
If Judge is correct, Monarch would be the first Apple TV+ series to support the 3D video capabilities of the $3,499 Vision Pro headset. The headset’s 3D capabilities are part of the VisionOS operating system that runs on the headset. The headset supports a Cinematic Environment that allows users to view their video selections at the frame rate and aspect ratio intended by the creator. It also supports spatial audio, and the virtual screen environment can feel like the viewer is watching their content on a 100 feet wide screen.
Apple last week showed off the technology at WWDC 2023, showing off its immersive stereoscopic 3D capabilities by using selected clips from James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water.
Apple first announced that it had signed an order for the Monarch series in January 2022. The Cupertino firm has yet to announce a premiere date for the series.
Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.
The series will be produced by Legendary Television. Co-creator Chris Black will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Black is best known for his work on “Outcast” and”Star Trek: Enterprise.”
