Display analyst Ross Young earlier this month said that Apple plans to introduce larger 6.3 and 6.9-inch display sizes for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max in 2024. He also said that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models will continue to feature the same 6.1 and 6.7-inch display sizes currently in use.
Now, an alleged CAD model of the larger iPhone 16 Pro Max (which according to the render could possibly be called the iPhone 16 Ultra) was recently shared with 9to5Mac by Sonny Dickson and used to create renderings showing just how much larger Apple’s largest iPhone 16 model could be.
The CAD model shows a noticeably larger iPhone 16 Pro Max that will apparently be significantly larger in the vertical dimension than in the horizontal dimension, compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 Pro Max device height will apparently increase by approximately 5 mm to ~165.0 mm while the width of the device appears to only increase by about 0.5 mm to ~77.2 mm.
In other iPhone 16-related news, Twitter account @URedditor today tweeted information about the rear camera lens arrangement on the lower-end iPhone 16 model, which will allegedly be arranged in a vertical layout. The lens arrangement will likely also be used on the iPhone 16 Plus as well.
The last time Apple used a vertical arrangement for rear camera lenses was for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. Apple transitioned to diagonally-arranged rear camera lenses with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, and continued to use the design with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. The diagonal layout is expected to be used one more model year, for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus a bit later this year, but that will apparently mark the last time the diagonal lens layout will be used.
The leaker said this change will make the device “instantly recognizable” as the latest model, although, so will other new design aspects such as the Dynamic Island and a USB-C port.
When Apple first launched the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, Apple noted that “a redesigned rear camera layout with diagonally arranged lenses enables the advanced dual-camera system,” so apparently Apple may have figured out a way to fit camera components within a vertical orientation again.
It’s very early in the iPhone 16 rumor cycle (heck, the iPhone 15 lineup is still awaiting an unveiling), so any rumors or reports about the iPhone 16 lineup (including leaked CAD models and camera lens layouts) should be taken with a HUGE grain of your favorite salt substitute.
