Today marks the launch of Warner Bros. new “Max” streaming service, merging both HBO Max and Discovery+ content. The service’s app is already beginning to appear on the Apple devices of subscribers and can be downloaded for free from the App Store.
Announced in April, the new streaming service will replace the HBO Max streaming service, while Discovery+ will continue to be available as a standalone streaming service.
The new service is just the latest in several rebranding efforts over the last few years for the HBO streaming service. The HBO GO and HBO Now streaming services were merged into a single entity, “HBO Max” in 2020. Following a 2022 merger between Discovery and HBO parent firm WarnerMedia, the newly formed Warner Bros. Discovery company announced that HBO Max and Discovery+ would merge.
The Max service will offer all HBO series and movies, Max Originals, and select series from the DC Universe, Cartoon Network, Warner Bros., Adult Swim, and much more. Content from Discovery will include content from HGTV, the Food Network, TLC, ID, Magnolia Network, Discovery, and more.
The Max streaming service will have three different price points available:
Existing HBO Max subscribers that subscribe through HBO will have access to Max at the same price as their HBO Max subscription. Viewers who subscribe through a TV, mobile, or wireless provider will be contacted about any price or plan changes.
On some platforms, the HBO Max app will automatically be updated to the Max app, and on others, users will be prompted to download the Max app when attempting to open the HBO Max app. Discovery+ customers can sign up as new Max customers, as those subscriptions will not transition. Discovery+ will continue to be available as a standalone service.
