Apple today released new 5E133 firmware for the AirPods 2, the AirPods 3, the original AirPods Pro, and the AirPods Max, up from the 5B58 and 5B59 firmware updates that were released in November and January.
While Apple does not offer immediately available release notes on what’s included in refreshed firmware updates for the AirPods, the company’s support document includes release information. According to it, the update offers “bug fixes and other improvements,” with no other details available.
There isn’t any way to manually update the firmware of the earbuds, and the new software will be installed over the air while the AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max are connected via Bluetooth to an iOS device.
If you place the AirPods in their case, connect them to a power source, and then pair them to an iPhone or iPad, they should update after a short period of time.
Here’s how to check the firmware version of your AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max earbuds:
Apple did not announce what features or fixes might be included in the new firmware. However, we will announce any new features or fixes in this space if and when we hear about them.
If you own AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max but do not have an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, there is a way to update the headphones’ firmware to the latest version. You can set up an appointment at an Apple Store or with an Apple Authorized Service Provider to update your firmware.
