Apple’s upcoming 15-inch MacBook Air will offer configurations that include two variants of the M2 chip. However, it will not offer a configuration option with the M2 Pro chip. That’s according to a tweet shared earlier today by Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Kuo said that he expects the new MacBook Air to be available in configurations with two M2 chip options that have differing numbers of cores, just like the existing 13-inch model. The news comes as a revision of Kuo’s June 2022 forecast, in which he predicted that the much-rumored 15-inch MacBook Pro would be available with either the M2 or M2 Pro chip.
Apple launched its 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip last year and it is available in 8- and 10-core GPU variants. The 2020 M1 model offered 7- and 8-core GPU options. Kuo’s tweet from today indicates the 15-inch MacBook Air is likely to mirror the 13-inch model in terms of chip specifications.
Kuo also confirmed that the new 15″ MacBook model will carry the MacBook Air moniker, rather than carrying a new product line name. He expects the device to ship five to six million units during 2023.
Last week, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported that an unreleased 15-inch MacBook Air powered by a processor that is “on par” with the M2 chip has been discovered in App Store developer logs. The much-rumored laptop is widely expected to debut at WWDC 2023 in June. Apple is also working on an updated 13-inch MacBook Air, says Gurman.
