Apple Pay Holdout Kroger Begins Accepting Apple’s Contactless Payment Following Years of Holding Out

Kroger last week finally began accepting Apple Pay and other contactless payment methods at select retail locations in Kentucky and Ohio. According to customers on Reddit and Twitter, customers are now able to tap to pay with an iPhone or Apple Watch at checkout.

It is currently unknown just how many Kroger locations are accepting NFC-based payments, or if contactless payments acceptance will be expanded to all 1,200 stores operating under the Kroger banner. Some Kroger-owned stores had begun accepting Apple Pay at some of the other grocery chains it owns over the past few years, including California grocer Ralphs, QFC in Washington and Oregon, and King Soopers stores in Colorado and Wyoming.

The Kroger-owned Fred Meyer chain also recently started accepting Apple Pay at its stores in the Northwest, while Kroger’s North Carolina-based banner Harris Teeter tweeted in March that it is “working towards accepting Apple Pay.”

Kroger was one of the largest Apple Pay holdouts in the U.S. since the service launched in 2014, alongside Walmart, The Home Depot, and Lowe’s.

The company will continue to offer its own service called Kroger Pay, which is a QR code-based checkout method to pay with a debit or credit card saved in the Kroger app.
