Netflix’s Lower-Priced Ad-Supported Service Now Available on Apple TV

Netflix’s cheaper ad-supported tier of service is now available on the Apple TV. This allows Netflix viewers that have opted for the more-affordable tier of the service to view content on the Apple set-top box.

Netflix’s $6.99 Basic With Ads plan didn’t work on ‌Apple TV‌ when it launched in November, despite it being available and working on competing devices, including Amazon Fire TV devices, Android, Chromecast with Google TV, game consoles, iOS devices, and numerous smart TVs.

Netflix at the time said that support for the plan would be “coming soon.” Until now, access to Netflix on the ‌Apple TV‌ was limited to the more expensive Basic, Standard, and Premium plans.

While Netflix had not officially announced the ad-supported streaming tier’s new Apple TV compatibility. As noted by TechCrunch, a Reddit user noticed that the Basic with Ads plan was now available on the recently updated version of the Netflix app on the ‌Apple TV‌, and Netflix did confirm that the cheaper tier is now on the Apple TV.

The Netflix Basic with Ads plan is priced at $6.99 per month, $3 cheaper than the Basic $9.99 per month plan with no ads. Netflix content won’t always be interrupted by commercials, as major releases will offer a pre-movie string of ads but no ads will interrupt the film.

Video quality up to 720p/HD; an average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour; a limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions; no ability to download titles.
