Mini-LED Display Demand Said to be Shrinking As Apple Eyes Transition to OLED

One of Apple’s leading mini-LED suppliers says demand for its displays for use in consumer electronic products is shrinking as Apple is said to be transitioning its iPad and MacBook lineups to OLED displays.

A DigiTimes report, citing industry sources within Apple mini-LED display provider Epistar, said that demand for mini-LED displays for use in consumer electronic devices is decreasing and that it expects demand for mini-LED displays for use in dashboards and displays for vehicles to spike in 2023.

A recent report indicated that Apple display vendor Samsung is now developing specific types of OLED displays for use in upcoming iPad Pro models. Apple is expected to debut an iPad Pro boasting and OLED display sometime in 2024. Apple’s move is causing mini-LED display manufacturers to find other uses for their output.

Apple has also been rumored to be preparing a 13-inch MacBook Air with an OLED display for release in 2024. OLED panels are also reportedly being considered for Apple’s upcoming iPhone SE refresh. However, display analyst Ross Young says Apple is wavering between OLED and LCD for use in the new handset’s display.
