Google Chrome for Mac was updated on Thursday, gaining Memory Saver and Energy Saver modes, which are designed to provide users more control over memory usage and battery life.
Memory Saver mode frees up memory from tabs you aren’t currently using so the active websites you’re browsing have the smoothest possible experience. Google says this is especially useful if you’re running other intensive applications, like editing family videos or playing games. Any inactive tabs will be reloaded when you need them.
When you’re browsing the Web with Chrome and your device battery level reaches 20%, Chrome is designed to save battery by limiting background activity and visual effects for websites with animations and videos.
Both new “saver” modes can be toggled on or off using the three-dot menu in Chrome, and important websites can be marked as exempt from Memory Saver.
The new modes are rolling out with the latest release of the Chrome app for Mac (version 108), and will be available to all users internationally in the coming weeks.
