Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman says Apple is working on multiple new external monitors, including a new version of its high-end Pro Display XDR that launched in December 2019.
In his Sunday newsletter, Gurman said the new monitors will be powered by Apple Silicon (the Studio Display is powered by an A13 Bionic chip).
Apple is working on multiple new external monitors as well, including an update to the Pro Display XDR that was launched alongside the Intel Mac Pro in 2019. It is possible, however, that the company’s next high-end display will ship after the Mac Pro, as the computer is further along in development than the monitor.
Those new monitors — like the Studio Display launched with the Mac Studio — will include Apple silicon. That helps the screens rely less on resources from the attached computer.
While Gurman didn’t share any additional details or a timeline for the monitors’ development and debut, he did mention that an all-new Mac Pro is further along in development than the updated Pro Display XDR.
In October, display industry consultant Ross Young claimed Apple was planning to launch a new monitor with a 27-inch mini-LED display in the first quarter of 2023. It’s possible the monitor mentioned by Young could be a new Studio Display with ProMotion.
The current Studio Display starts at $1,599. Meanwhile, the higher-end Pro Display XDR starts at $4,999.
