Driver in Deadly Apple Store Car Crash Says It Was an Accident

The driver of the Toyota 4Runner that crashed through the Apple Derby Street retail store in Massachusetts, killing one and severely injuring at least 20 other people, says the incident was not a planned attack but was an “unfortunate accident.”

Bradley Rein, 52, drove his 4Runner through the front glass of the Apple Store in Hingham, Massachusetts, on Monday morning. The SUV crashed through the glass, only stopping when it hit the Apple Store’s rear wall.

MassLive reports Rein was in court Tuesday morning and faces charges of reckless motor vehicle homicide. Rein said his foot became stuck on the gas in the parking lot outside, and that he was unable to brake before his vehicle plowed into the store. Rein had told officers he had no medical issues, and that as far as he knew, his car had no mechanical issues.

Rein’s defense attorney requested bail be set at $20,000. The Hingham District Court instead set bail at $100,000.

Rein was reportedly uninjured in the crash and went with officers to the Hingham Police Department, where he voluntarily took a breathalyzer test, in which tested as negative.

Doctors at South Shore Hospital treated 17 people, others were taken to a Boston hospital. The injuries were described as “life and limb-threatening,” and included head traumas and what were described as “mangled limbs.”

A 65-year-old New Jersey man, Kevin Bradley, was pronounced dead at the scene.
