Apple released its iOS 15.7.1 Release Candidate made available earlier this week, and it appears to be breaking Face ID on some iPhones. User reports from Reddit and Twitter show that some iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro models and possibly other iPhones are being affected.
Affected users report that when they attempt to reset Face ID on their iPhone, they see a “Face ID Is Not Available” error, resulting in facial recognition being completely broken. The issue causing the problem is currently unknown, and Apple hasn’t indicated that it is aware of the problem.
While Release Candidates are generally the last pre-release version of an operating system and usually end up being identical to the final release of the OS, Apple has been known to fix discovered bugs and release a second Release Candidate that fixes the issues.
While iOS 16 is available – and we haven’t seen any reports of similar issues with it – some users are either using a device that is not compatible with 16 or for one reason or the other, don’t wish to use the latest operating system.
