Dark Sky No Longer Available From iOS App Store

Apple has removed its popular Dark Sky weather app from the App Store. The Cupertino firm in mid-September began reminding users that the app would be shut down and would no longer be supported as of January 1, 2023. The shutdown of the app had been announced last year. The removal of the app comes a bit earlier than expected.

On the App Store and in a prompt shown to users, the app said that many of Dark Sky’s features and capabilities have been integrated into the new Weather app on iOS 16.

“Support for the Dark Sky app will be ending on January 1st, 2023. Dark Sky’s forecast technology will be integrated into the Apple Weather app with ‌iOS 16‌ this fall,” the app’s ‌App Store‌ description said.

Apple acquired the popular weather app back in April 2020, and shortly after its purchase was confirmed, Apple shut down the app for Android devices. While Apple has included Dark Sky features in its iOS Weather app, it said that the Dark Sky standalone iOS app, web app, and API will remain available until the end of 2022. Apple had originally planned to terminate the app and API at the end of 2021.

Dark Sky had announced in an update to its blog that “support for the Dark Sky API service for existing customers will continue until the end of 2022.”
