Apple Reminding Users That Dark Sky iOS Weather App Shutting Down on January 1

Apple is reminding users of the Dark Sky weather app on iOS that the app will be shut down and will no longer be supported as of January 1, 2023. The shutdown of the app had been announced last year.

On the App Store and in a prompt shown to users, the app says that many of Dark Sky’s features and capabilities have been integrated into the new Weather app on iOS 16, which was released to the public yesterday.

“Support for the Dark Sky app will be ending on January 1st, 2023. Dark Sky’s forecast technology will be integrated into the Apple Weather app with ‌iOS 16‌ this fall,” the app’s ‌App Store‌ description says.

Apple acquired the popular weather app back in April 2020, and shortly after its purchase was confirmed, Apple shut down the app for Android devices. While Apple has included Dark Sky features in its iOS Weather app, the Dark Sky standalone iOS app, web app, and API will remain available until the end of 2022. Apple had originally planned to terminate the app and API at the end of 2021.

Dark Sky had announced in an update to its blog that “support for the Dark Sky API service for existing customers will continue until the end of 2022.” The iOS and web apps will also remain available until the end of 2022.
