India Considering New Rules That Could Force Apple to Adopt USB-C on iPhone

Mint reports India is considering following the European Union’s lead and is mulling new regulations on consumer products sold in the country, which would force Apple and other electronics firms to adapt the USB-C standard for connectivity in their devices by as early as 2024.

In June, the European Parliament’s Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection announced that the European Union has reached a landmark agreement that forces a variety of consumer electronics (including the iPhone and other Apple devices and accessories) to use USB-C port charging by fall 2024.

The legislation still needs to be formally approved by the European Parliament and European Council later this year before Apple is forced to change its ways.

The government held a meeting with industry stakeholders earlier this week to explore the option of adopting a common charger for mobile phones and other portable electronic devices.

“The meeting will be more of an explorative nature. We will try to learn from the stakeholders how a common charger can be adopted in India. We will also try to understand their concerns,” India’s secretary of Consumer Affairs told local media outlets.

Apple has long been rumored to be developing and testing an iPhone using a USB-C connector by Apple industry analysts and journalists. Other Apple products are also expected to move to USB-C in the near future.
