Apple earlier this week unveiled its new watchOS 9 Apple Watch operating system, which will allow users to make VoIP calls directly from an Apple Watch through supported third-party apps.
Apple mentioned during its WWDC 2022 keynote that users will be able to start, end, or mute VoIP calls from the Apple Watch in supported apps like Webex, allowing Apple Watch users to answer VoIP calls right from their wearable. The feature is made possible thanks to Apple’s expanding its CallKit framework for developers in watchOS 9.
Additional details about the new framework features are currently unavailable. We’ll have to wait and see if popular VoIP apps, such as WhatsApp will add this functionality on their Apple Watch app.
While Apple Watch users can already make calls over WiFi on the Apple Watch, using FaceTime Audio in the iPhone app, VoIP calling in watchOS 9 will provide more VoIP options in the coming months.
The developer preview of watchOS 9 is available to Apple Developer Program members starting today, and a public beta will be available to Apple Watch users next month. watchOS 9 will be available this fall as a free software update for Apple Watch Series 4 or later paired with iPhone 8 or later and iPhone SE (second generation) or later, running iOS 16.
