Microsoft today announced that Fortnite is now available through its Xbox Cloud Gaming service. This means iPhone and iPad users with a Microsoft account can now play Fortnite for free on their devices.
The game is the first free-to-play game to be added to the Xbox Cloud Gaming service, which is available in 26 countries Android smartphone and tablet users, along with Windows PC users can play Fortnite on the service.
Xbox Cloud Gaming is a browser-based cloud gaming service, so no app needs to be installed. Also, the game is free, so there is no membership required. It can be played using native touch controls or a connected controller.
Competing cloud-based gaming service GeForce NOW is also beta testing Fortnite on iOS devices, but it is currently a closed beta. Fortnite through Xbox Cloud Gaming is available to anyone with a Microsoft account.
Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store, just hours after Epic Games debuted a direct payment option to get around Apple’s in-app purchases rules that give the Cupertino firm a 30% cut of the action. Epic Games immediately filed a lawsuit against Apple for pulling Fortnite from the App Store.
