WhatsApp is reportedly testing the introduction of new limits as to forwarding messages to other group chats in the service’s iOS messaging app. The move is believed to be intended to help cut down on the “spread of misinformation.”
Many see social media platforms as hotbeds of misinformation, as the platforms make it quite easy to share information with other users. Meta-owned WhatsApp is testing the limits it can put on how messages spread.
WABetaInfo reports the beta of WhatsApp for iOS now has a feature limiting how far a forwarded message can travel. Users using the beta can forward a message to a group chat once. However, that same message cannot be forwarded to further group chats, as the app will inform the users that “Forwarded messages can only be sent to one group chat.”
The limitation is said to only apply to messages that have already been forwarded. This means that the original message poster can still send the initial message on to other users without the same limit.
It isn’t clear exactly if/when the bet version of the app will be released to the public.
