A new report from The Elec claims Apple is collaborating with LG Display to develop a foldable OLED display panel with ultra-thin cover glass for use in future models of the iPad and MacBook.
This little tidbit was mentioned in a report about LG Display’s supplying 17-inch foldable 4K OLED panels to HP this year, which will be used for an in-folding notebook with an 11-inch display when closed.
LG Display is quickly becoming an industry go-to when it comes to foldable OLED displays. The company recently supplied the 13.3-inch display panel for the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold.
Near the end of the article, The Elec mentioned that LG Display “is also collaborating with Apple to develop another foldable OLED panel.”
The panel is being designed for tablets and notebooks with ultra-thin glass as the cover window instead of polyimide.
The Elec’s claim jibes with a recent claim from display analyst Ross Young, who said that Apple is exploring all-screen foldable notebooks with displays around 20-inches in size.
According to Young, a timeframe for launching Apple’s foldable notebook is “likely later” than 2025, with 2026 or 2027 being floated as other possibilities.
