Soon after the launch of Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro with 120Hz ProMotion displays, it became clear that most third-party apps were topping out at 60Hz, not taking full advantage of the 120Hz maximum refresh rate of the new handsets. Apple said at the time that a Core Animation bug causing the issue would be fixed at a later time. That time is now, apparently.
Apple’s iOS 15.4 beta, released earlier this week, appears to be addressing the Core Animation issue. The new beta will see apps offering 120Hz refresh rates for animations on iPhones that offer ProMotion support.
Apollo developer Christian Selig Tweeted on Thursday that someone inside of Apple had informed him that a fix for the issue has been implemented in iOS 15.4 and that he was able to confirm the change himself.
Yay, got a little message from someone at Apple today that this is fixed in the iOS 15.4 betas and all apps automatically get 120 Hz animations on supported iPhones going forward, and just confirmed myself. (See attached, 1/120 = 8.33 ms) 🥳🥳🥳 https://t.co/EtZ9zkrM6S pic.twitter.com/04cl8uLb11

120Hz ProMotion support is designed to provide a smoother viewing experience for scrolling through app content, gaming, and more.
