Well-respected Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple is planning to launch three new Apple Watch models during 2022. Kuo’s comments were included in a note to investors shared by MacRumors.
Kuo said that the 2022 Apple Watch lineup will include the Apple Watch Series 8, the second-generation Apple Watch SE, and a new “extreme sports” version:
The new Apple Watch in 2H22 includes Apple Watch 8, the new Apple Watch SE, and the extreme sports version. Luxshare-ICT is the NPI supplier for Apple Watch 8 and the extreme sports versions.
Kuo’s prediction jibes with last week’s prediction by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Gurman said that the 2022 Apple Watch lineup will include the Apple Watch Series 8, as well as an update for the Apple Watch SE.
The Apple Watch SE was released in September 2020 and has since served as a mid-range option for Apple Watch customers. While the SE features a design similar to the Apple Watch Series 6, it lacks advanced features such as an always-on display, blood oxygen sensor, and ECG functionality.
Apple usually offers its “SE” devices for several years without an update. Since Apple did not update its SE model this year, it could be due for an update in 2022.
No details are currently available as to what new features might be available for the 2022 Apple Watch SE, but it could feature a slightly updated design, along with improved health features.
Apple is planning an entirely new Apple Watch aimed at sports athletes, says Gurman. He says that the new Apple Watch, will feature a “ruggedized” design that may feature a case that’s more resistant to scratches, dents, falls, and more.
