Apple Maps Product Lead David Dorn and Design Lead Meg Frost recently sat down with CNN to discuss the Apple Maps features that were introduced alongside the iOS 15 update. Unsurprisingly, the duo says it’s a better idea for iPhone users to opt for Apple Maps over competitors like Waze and Google Maps.
Dorn says there are three major reasons why Apple Maps is the best choice.
- Apple is making serious investments into Maps to improve it.
- Privacy is central and Apple isn’t tracking your location for data purposes when you use Apple Maps.
- Maps are a part of the Apple ecosystem and it integrates well with other Apple devices and services.
iOS 15 added new 3D city details in select areas like London, New York, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Navigation updates add more detail at complex interchanges. Frost said that Apple wanted to make maps “both safer and visually satisfying to navigate.”
“Before the new map, we had a two-dimensional product and we really had a flat representation of the world. So we took the opportunity to create a realistic globe that accurately represents the sizes of countries in 3D,” said Frost.
“We pick the amount of detail we find appropriate and create a 3D mesh of the building landmark itself. And we apply it to the base map,” continued Frost.
