If You’re Going to Shoot 4K ProRes Video, Get an iPhone 13 Pro With at Least 256GB Storage

The new iPhone 13 Pro models support 4K ProRes video recording. However, there is a bit of a “gotcha” in that statement. You’ll need an iPhone 13 Pro‌ or Pro Max with at least 256GB of storage space to use the feature.

On Apple’s tech specs page for the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, Apple says that you’ll be limited to shooting 1080p ProRes video at 30 frames per second if you have an ‌iPhone 13 Pro‌ or ‌iPhone 13 Pro‌ Max with the base 128GB of storage.

256, 512, or 1TB storage capacities are required for recording ProRes video at 4K at 30 frames per second.

iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max support ProRes video recording in the Camera app at 1080p 30 fps with the 128GB storage option and up to 4K 30 fps with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options.

The ProRes codec offers higher color fidelity and less compression, and it is often used for professional work such as commercials, films, and TV broadcasts. iPhone 13 Pro‌ and Pro Max users can capture, edit, and share professional-quality video right on their devices.

Even if you do opt for 256GB or more of storage for your iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max, ProRes support will not be available at first. The feature will be coming in a future iOS 15 update.
