NordVPN Updates macOS App to Offer Native Apple Silicon Support

Well-known VPN service NordVPN has officially announced that it has rolled out an update to its macOS app that adds native support for Apple Silicon-powered Macs.

While the company began rolling out the update on August 3, the VPN provider today officially announced that version 6.6.1 will provide all M1 Mac owners will get full-fledged M1 performance as a part of the VPN’s familiar experience.

Currently, M1 Mac models include the Mac mini, MacBook Air, 24-inch iMac, and the 13-inch MacBook Pro.

The 6.6.1 update is now available through the App Store and for download from the NordVPN website.

While the VPN’s app ran just fine on M1 Macs, it did so via Rosetta 2, which translates the code in Intel Mac apps to work with M1-based Macs. The new universal version of the app runs more efficiently on M1 Macs, while still running optimally on Intel Macs.

“We reworked the NordVPN app to run natively on M1 Macs, which will optimize app performance and user experience for users with newer devices. Additionally, when reworking our app to run natively on different operating systems, we kept in mind the switchover process and maintained the user at the forefront of our minds,” says Vykintas Maknickas, Product Strategist at NordVPN. “Unlike with many VPN providers, all you will need to do to gain access to the appropriate NordVPN app for your operating system is simply update the app — you are good to go.”
