Supply chain sources tell Chinese technology blog cnBeta that Apple has increased its order with TSMC to make in excess of 100 million A15 processors for its upcoming “iPhone 13” lineup. TSMC recently began production of Apple’s new A15 processor.
Apple had reportedly planned for up to 95 million A15 processors but has now ordered in excess of 100 million. cnBeta says supply chain sources tell it that the increase is partly due to Apple’s expectations for high demand for the next iPhone.
However, part of the reason for the increase is also due to the company’s need to secure processors as the global chip shortage continues. The publication says that Apple is making “every effort to prepare for production capacity.”
TSMC is already prioritizing orders from Apple and automobile manufacturers as the chip shortage continues. TSMC is currently in the process of building a new 5nm chip plant in Arizona.
