While Podcast Subscription support debuted alongside the iOS 14.6 update, Apple announced in late May that the rollout of the feature would be delayed until June to ensure “the best experience.”
Podcast Subscriptions will allow podcast creators to offer paid subscription options to provide access to ad-free listening, exclusive content, and other perks.
Pricing will start at 49 cents per month. Apple will wet its beak to the tune of 30% of subscription revenue that creators generate in their first year on the platform, and after that, Apple will collect 15%. This is the same pricing setup that Apple uses for other subscription options.
Apple likely delayed the new feature due to complaints about changes in the Podcast app in the iOS 14.5 update. Users complained about the usability of the app, and Apple began to address the complaints in iOS 14.6. The company says further fixes are in the works.
