Ming-Chi Kuo: Apple’s Upcoming Mixed Reality headset to Boast 15 optical Camera Modules

Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shared more information on what he says will be the specs for Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset. Kuo says the new headset will feature a total of 15 optical camera modules. Kuo’s remarks were included in a research note shared by MacRumors.

Kuo says eight of the 15 camera modules will be used to provide see-through augmented reality experiences, six modules will be used for “innovative biometrics,” and one camera module will be used for environmental detection.  Many of the lenses will be supplied by Largan.

Kuo’s remarks are a follow-up to a report from yesterday that shared several details about the much-anticipated Apple mixed reality headset, which Kup expects to see launch in 2022.

Kuo said that while several prototypes of Apple’s mixed reality headset currently weigh in at 200 to 300 grams. However, the final weight will be reduced to 100 to 200 grams if Apple can solve technical problems. That means they would weigh in as considerably lighter than existing VR headsets.

Kuo also expects the headset to be priced at around $1,000 in the United States.

Kuo says the headset, which will be “portable” with independent power and storage,” will boast Sony Micro-LED displays several optical modules to provide a “see-through AR experience,” adding that the headset can “also offer a VR experience.”

While the headset will be “portable,” it will not be truly “mobile” like an iPhone. Kup says that when technology improves, the new product’s mobility can be enhanced.
