Microsoft Discontinues Cortana App for iOS and Android

Microsoft has today shut down its Cortana mobile app. The Redmond firm has ended all support for third-party Cortana skills and has dropped the Cortana app for iOS and Android devices.

Cortana is Microsoft’s AI-based personal assistant, similar to Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa. The Cortana mobile app originally hit devices in November 2018 but failed to gain a user base anywhere near its competitors.

A Microsoft support page, from today, March 31, explains that the mobile app is no longer supported, with reminders and lists no longer available within the app. (They can still be accessed through Windows Cortana.) Cortana reminders, lists, and tasks are automatically synced to the Microsoft To Do app, which is available as a free download on iOS and Android.

Microsoft announced the planned shutdown of the apps back in July 2020. At that time, Microsoft said it would be shifting toward a “transformational AI-powered assistant experience” in its Microsoft 365 apps.
