Google today announced that the Apple TV app is now available on the Chromecast with Google TV device. The $50 dongle provides access to numerous streaming services, as well as other Android TV apps.
Google had promised back in December that the Apple TV app would be coming to the Chromecast sometime in early 2021. In addition to Chromecast with Google TV, the Apple TV app will also be available on Google TVs from Sony and TCL. Google plans to roll out the app to more Android TV-powered devices in the coming months.
Google announced the availability of Apple TV in a tweet earlier today.
The Apple TV app provides access to Apple TV+ content for Apple TV+ subscribers. Users can view content from Apple TV channels, as well as view rented and purchased content, including TV shows and movies. With Family Sharing, up to six family members can share subscriptions to Apple TV+ and Apple TV channels.
The Chromecast with Google TV is packed with the latest technology—it streams crystal-clear video in up to 4K HDR at up to 60 frames per second and now has a voice remote. The remote has a dedicated Google Assistant button that helps you find something to watch, answer everyday questions like “how’s the weather?” or dim your compatible smart home lights with just your voice. It also eliminates the need for multiple remotes thanks to programmable TV controls for power, volume, and input.
In the spirit of honesty, this writer owns a Chromecast with Google TV, and while it isn’t nearly as powerful as an Apple TV, the device does make an excellent addition to any secondary television in the home.
