Apple Releases macOS Big Sur 11.2.2 – Offers Fix to Prevent Certain USB-C Hubs and Docks From Damaging Some MacBooks

Apple today released macOS Big Sur 11.2.2, the fourth update to its ‌macOS Big Sur‌ operating system. The release comes two weeks following the release of macOS Big Sur 11.2.1.

The update includes a fix that prevents MacBook Pro (2019 or later) and MacBook Air (2020 or later) models from incurring damage when they are connected to certain third-party, non-compliant powered USB-C hubs and docks.

The macOS Big Sur‌ 11.2.2‌ update is free and can be downloaded on all compatible Macs using the Software Update section of System Preferences.

The macOS Big Sur‌ 11.2.2 release notes are as follows:

macOS Big Sur 11.2.2 prevents MacBook Pro (2019 or later) and MacBook Air (2020 or later) models from incurring damage when they are connected to certain third-party, non-compliant powered USB-C hubs and docks.

There have been several reports from Mac users who say they have connected USB-C hubs and docks to their machines, resulting in their Mac becoming non-functional. The affected Macs’ screens go blank and unresponsive after connecting the dock. Many of the users reporting issues apparently bought hubs and docks from fly-by-night firms.
