Popular macOS media player VLC was updated on Tuesday to version 3.0.12, adding native support for Apple Silicon Macs. VLC 3.0.12 is the thirteenth update of “Vetinari”
VLC version 3 features include:
- Hardware decoding by default, to get 4K and 8K playback!
- Support for 10bits and HDR
- VLC supports 360 video and 3D audio, up to Ambisonics 3rd order
- Allows audio passthrough for HD audio codecs
- Can stream to Chromecast devices, even in formats not supported natively
- Can play Blu-Ray Java menus: BD-J
- VLC supports browsing of local network drives and NAS
VLC version 3.0.12 fixes include:
- dd native support for Apple Silicon
- Fix audio distortion when starting playback on macOS
- Fix crashes with Direct3D video filters

VLC 3.0 is a free downloaded for Mac from the VideoLan website.
As pointed out by 9to5Mac, VLC is not yet offered with a universal binary, which means that the app now has two different versions: one for Intel Macs and one for M1 Macs. Once you update the VLC app for macOS to version 3.0.12, you must check for updates again and install version 3.0.12.1 — which is compiled for ARM machines.
