Apple’s iOS 14.4 update, released yesterday, introduces a new feature on iPhone 12 devices that warns users when the device’s camera is unable to be verified as a genuine Apple camera.
In addition to the new warning, Apple has shared a support document that stresses the importance of having your device serviced by trained technicians using genuine Apple cameras. (Via MacRumors)
If you need to replace your iPhone camera, it’s important for certified technicians who use genuine Apple camera parts to repair it.
Only technicians who have completed Apple service training and who use Apple genuine parts and tools should replace iPhone cameras. These service providers include: Apple, Apple Authorized Service Providers, or Independent Repair Providers using genuine Apple parts. Replacements not performed by Apple, authorized service providers, or certified technicians might not follow proper safety and repair procedures and could result in improper function or issues with image quality or overall device safety. Apple camera parts are designed to fit precisely within the device. Additionally, repairs that don’t properly replace screws or cowlings might leave behind loose parts that could damage the battery, cause overheating, or result in injury.
The iPhone camera is engineered together with iOS software for optimal performance and quality. A nongenuine camera might cause compatibility or performance issues. For example, an issue might arise after an iOS software update that contains camera updates or new camera features.
If a service provider uses nongenuine camera parts, the following might also occur:
- Camera does not focus correctly or images are not sharp
- When using Portrait mode, the subject might not be in focus or only partially in focus
- A 3rd-party app that uses the camera might freeze or quit unexpectedly
- Real-time preview in 3rd-party apps might appear blank or might get stuck
The new non-genuine camera notifications will show up on an iPhone 12, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, or 12 mini if the device has been repaired using a non-Apple camera component.
If you see the message “Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple camera.” when you go to Settings -> General -> About, the camera in your iPhone is unable to be verified. The warning will also show up on the Lock screen for the first four days after a repair, and in the Settings app for 15 days.
The warning will not affect the ability to use the iPhone or access the camera, and your iPhone will remain fully functional.
