Apple’s iPad continues to sit atop the tablet market, thanks to its continued sales growth during 2020.
New data shared today by Canalys says Apple shipped an estimated 19.2 million iPads during the calendar fourth quarter of 2020, a 40% increase over the estimated 13.7 million tablets that it shipped in the same quarter of 2019.
Apple held 36% of the market during the quarter, nearly double its next closest competitor, Samsung, who had a 19% share of the market, shipped an estimated 9.9 million tablets during the holiday quarter.
Amazon held the number 3 position, shipping an estimated 6.5 million tablets for a 12% market share, while Lenovo and Huawei filled out the top five, shipping 5.6 million and 3.5 million respectively.
During the entirety of 2020, Apple shipped an estimated 58.8 million tablets, a 24% increase over all of 2019. Samsung shipped an estimated 31 million, Huawei shipped 16.3 million units and Amazon sent out 15.9 million.
Canalys also published estimates for the combined PC, tablet, and Chromebooks market for Q4 2020, and by this measurement, Apple took the number two spot, with an estimated 26.4 million combined iPad and Mac shipments, up 42% from their combined shipments in 2019.
Lenovo took the top spot by this measurement, with 28.8 million units shipped. HP came in third with 19.3 million, Dell was fourth with 15.9 million, and Samsung came in fifth with 11.5 million.
For all of 2020, Apple shipped an estimated 81.4 million iPads and Macs, coming in second to Lenovo who shipped 87 million units.
Demand for Mac and iPad devices are expected to remain strong in 2021, as folks continue to be forced to work and learn from home, due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
