A new research note from well connected TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shares his expectations for next year’s “iPhone 13” lineup. (It’s not too early for that, right?) Ming sees good news for 2021 iPhone shipments, based on a number of factors.
Kuo says the iPhone 13 will be available in the same model sizes as this year’s iPhone lineup but will boast major improvements in camera technology. Kuo says the Ultra Wide cameras on the two high-end models will be significantly upgraded to f/1.8, 6P (six-element lens) with autofocus. All of the iPhone 12 models are equipped with f/2.4, 5P (five-element lens) Ultra Wide cameras with fixed focus.
Kuo even has predictions for the 2022 iPhone lineup, which he says will sport the same improved Ultra Wide camera with f/1.8, 6P, and autofocus.
Kuo notes that Largan is likely to become the major supplier of voice coil motors (VCM) for the improved Ultra Wide cameras. Largan is expected to obtain about 70% of the VCM orders for the iPhone 13 under the advantages of vertical integration of lens production and VCM.
Kuo sees shipments for the iPhone 13 increasing year-over-year, thanks to a more robust 5G infrastructure in the second half of 2021, a return. to the traditional September iPhone release timeframe, and the aforementioned camera improvements for the iPhone 13.
