Apple’s Craig Federighi on Native Windows on M1 Macs: ‘That’s Really Up to Microsoft’

Apple executives have been making the interview rounds about Apple’s recently released M1 Macs and today, Ars Technica has published an interview with software engineering chief Craig Federighi, hardware technologies lead Johny Srouji, and marketing VP Greg Joswiak.

While much of the information focuses on topics that have been previously rehashed in other interviews, there is a comment from Federighi about Microsoft and Windows support on the M1 Macs. While Windows is currently not supported on the M1 Macs, it is certainly a feature that many Mac users would like to see.

As for Windows running natively on the machine, “that’s really up to Microsoft,” he said. “We have the core technologies for them to do that, to run their ARM version of Windows, which in turn of course supports x86 user mode applications. But that’s a decision Microsoft has to make, to bring to license that technology for users to run on these Macs. But the Macs are certainly very capable of it.”

Federighi also indicated that Windows in the cloud could be a possible future solution, and mentioned CrossOver, which can run x86 Windows apps on M1 Macs using Rosetta 2.

The full interview can be read at Ars Technica.
