Apple earlier today made the latest version of its macOS operating system – macOS Big Sur – to the public. The new operating system brings a number of new features to Macs old and new and is the first version of macOS to support Apple’s new M1-powered Macs.
The Big Sur update can be downloaded to a compatible Mac via the Software Update section of System Preferences. Like all Mac updates, the macOS Big Sur update is available free of charge. The update is also available in the Mac App Store.
The update has apparently overloaded Apple’s servers, as some users are reporting issues downloading and installing the Big Sur update. Users report extremely long download times that have prevented users from installing the update. Other users have reported being able to download the update and then having the installation fail.
In addition to download and installation problems, Apple’s developer site also went down for a while, and as a result, some third-party apps were unable to be opened up.
