Roku on Wednesday announced that Apple’s AirPlay 2 and HomeKit are now rolling out to sect Roku devices and TVs.
The update comes as part of a free Roku OS 9.4 update, which is available for the Roku Ultra, Roku Streambar, Roku Smart Soundbar, Roku Streaming Stick+, and Roku Premiere. The software is also rolling out to Roku-based 4K TVs from TCL and other makers.
Apple’s AirPlay 2 allows users to stream, control, and share content from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to a compatible Roku streaming device. Users can view movies, TV shows, and family videos, listen to popular music, or browse vacation photos. Users can also mirror exactly what they see on their Apple device on their big-screen.
Apple HomeKit offers an easy and secure way for Apple users to use Siri and the Home app on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac to control their compatible Roku device. Or, scenes can be used to group a Roku device with other HomeKit-enabled devices to control an entire room at once.
Roku OS 9.4 also features the Live TV Channel Guide on Roku TVs, helpful hints for Roku Voice, Surround Level Control for Multi-Channel Audio, updated Theme Packs, and performance enhancements. Roku TV models are expected to receive Roku OS 9.4, which enables Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit for select 4K Roku TVs, in phases over the coming weeks.
