WSJ’s Joanna Stern Reviews Apple’s New MagSafe Charger

A new iPhone 12 video review by the Wall Street Journal‘s Joanna Stern reveals that Apple’s MagSafe charger charges more than two-times slower than a wired 20W USB-C charger.

Stern offered criticism of the Apple MagSafe technology, saying the idea seems to be better in theory than in practice.

While Stern found that the MagSafe charger did charge an iPhone 12 faster than a traditional 7.5W Qi wireless charger, it was still slower than plugging directly into a 20W charger. In charging an empty iPhone 12 to 50%, the 20W charger took only 28 minutes, while the MagSafe took 1 hour. (It should be noted that it has long been known that wireless charging takes longer to charge a device than a wired charger does.)

Stern also criticized the combined price of the 20W power adapter and the MagSafe charger, which adds up to $58 combined. She also didn’t like the length of the MagSafe charger’s cable, which is under a yard in length.
