Microsoft on Monday released an updated version of its Xbox app for the iPhone and iPad, which now allows Xbox users to play their games that are installed on their Xbox console remotely on their iOS device using streaming.
Testing of this feature has been undergoing testing for the last few weeks, as Microsoft first delivered the feature to Xbox app beta testers in September.
The app’s new features are listed in its release notes:
– Set up new consoles and queue games
– Play remotely from your console
– View and share game clips & screenshots
– Party chat with friends across devicesHave a look around the new app. More awesomeness is on the way!
The new Xbox app streaming option should not be confused with Microsoft’s xCloud service, which is not yet available on iOS devices, due to Apple’s ban on cloud gaming apps in the App Store. While xCloud streams games directly from Microsoft’s servers, the Xbox streaming option requires users to stream the games that are installed on their Xbox consoles.
The Xbox app streaming feature works outside of the home, allowing Xbox gamers to access and play their games from their home Xbox, even from outside of the home. The streaming feature requires supported phones or tablets (mobile data charges may apply) and a supported Bluetooth controller, with supported games. Xbox One or Xbox Series X must be turned on or in Instant-On mode.
Any Xbox game that is installed on a compatible Xbox console can be streamed to your iOS device, with the exception of backward compatible original Xbox or Xbox 360 titles.
The Xbox app is free, and is available for iPhone and iPad devices, in the App Store. [GET IT HERE]
