When Apple debuted tvOS 14 back in June, one of the highlights of the new version was support for viewing 4K videos in the YouTube app. However, when tvOS 14 was released to the public, 4K support was literally nowhere to be seen.
However, it appears that 4K support in the Apple TV YoutTube app is finally rolling out to Apple TV 4K devices. Reports on Reddit (via FlatpanelsHD) indicate that 4K support in the YouTube app is finally starting to rollout. Multiple users report seeing 4K playback options on their Apple TV 4K running tvOS 14, tvOS 14.0.1, and tvOS 14.2.
If you haven’t seen the option on your Apple TV 4k as yet, be patient, it is apparently slowly rolling out to users. This reporter’s Apple TV 4K showed 1080p as the highest viewing option when viewing a video marked as 4K. Those that do have access to 4K viewing report that they are not able to enable HDR and 4K videos are limited to a 30 frames per second framerate.
At this point, we’re not sure when 4K support will roll out to all Apple TV 4k devices, or if the missing HDR option is temporary, or an Apple TV 4K-based limitation. We’ll let you know if we hear anything else.
