Apple to Enable Dual SIM Mode 5G on iPhone 12 Lineup With Software Update Later This Year

Earlier today, we reported that an Apple Sales FAQ sent to retailers and carriers said that using an iPhone 12 in Dual SIM mode slows the device’s cellular data speed to 4G LTE levels. Now comes news that Apple will enable Dual SIM 5G in a software update that will come later this year.

An internal Verizon slide (via MacRumors), indicates that Apple is planning to enable 5G support in Dual SIM mode with a software update later this year. In the meantime, eSIM customers must remove the physical SIM from their iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro if they want to access its 5G network.

All 5G iPhone 12 models support Dual SIM mode, which allows it to switch between a physical SIM card and an eSIM using another phone number or carrier. This allows users to have two lines of service on one iPhone, making it easy to have both business and personal lines on a single iPhone, or it can also be used for purchasing data-only phone plans for international traveling. The feature has been supported by iPhones since the iPhone XS.
