One of the big features in the tvOS 14 update was support for 4K videos from YouTube. However, even though tvOS 14 was rolled out to the public earlier this week, 4K content is not yet available from the streaming service.
As noted by MacRumors, many Apple TV 4K users report 4K YouTube video content is not available, even after updating to tvOS 14. Selecting a 4K video on an Apple TV 4K that has the tvOS 14 update installed still limits playback to 1080p, which was the highest resolution available under tvOS 13.
Meanwhile, the Apple TV website continues to list 4K YouTube support as a feature that is included in tvOS 14. While we’re not certain what’s going on, we are certain that numerous Apple TV 4K owners are ticked off about it. As noted by some users, there were some bugs in 4K playback in the tvOS 14 betas, so perhaps the feature was held back until bugs are ironed out.
YouTube has confirmed that the feature is on the way, so stay tuned.
Sorry about the back and forth — jumping in to clarify that Apple TV 4K will support 4K playback soon. Stay tuned for an update here.
