Do you have a Mac and have noticed that you see a “Not Charging” warning even when you have it plugged into a power supply? Apple has finally explained why.
Apple last week released a support document that explains why you may see this warning. If your Mac is running macOS 10.15.5 or later it has a Battery Health Management feature that is designed to preserve the life of the battery. Occasionally, you’ll see your Mac pause its charging to calibrate the battery’s health management.
Depending on its settings, your Mac might temporarily pause charging to help calibrate battery health management, a feature designed to improve the lifespan of your battery.
When Battery Health Management is activated, you may see the “Not Charging” warning and you may see the charge level indicator lowered for a short period of time. This is normal, and charging to a full charge will resume based on your usage habits.
If your Mac notebook has Thunderbolt 3 ports and uses macOS Catalina 10.15.5 or later, you can use battery health management to help extend the life of your battery.
It should be noted that you might also see “Not Charging” when your Mac isn’t getting enough power to charge the battery, such as when it’s not using the correct power adapter and cable, or it’s plugged into a power source that isn’t delivering enough power.
