Apple is readying to extend its Apple Watch ECG feature availability to South Korea, indicate recent government filings. Although the ECG functionality has been available since the release of the Apple Watch Series 4 in 2018.
etnews reports Apple has obtained approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) in South Korea for its ECG app. With the approval, Apple will likely soon issue an update for the Apple Watch in the country, which will enable the electrocardiogram feature and irregular heart notifications on the devices.
Apple is required to gain approval from government health agencies in each country before enabling the ECG feature in the country. Apple gained U.S. FDA clearance to enable the functionality when the Apple Watch Series 4 launched in 2018.
When the update to enable the ECG functionality will take place in South Korea is anyone’s guess. In May, Japan and Brazil gained approval for ECG functionality and irregular heart rhythm notifications on Apple Watch, but it has not yet enabled the features in those countries.
