Apple Offers a Peek at New Emoji Characters Coming to iOS 14 in the Fall

Apple on Thursday offered a preview of some of the new emoji characters that will be arriving alongside iOS 14 and other updates this fall. World Emoji Day is today, July 17.

The new emoji (shared on the Emojipedia blog), will add 117 new characters and were approved by the Unicode Consortium earlier this year as a part of the Emoji 13.0 release. In addition to iOS 14, the new emoji characters should also debut in iPadOS 14, macOS Big Sur, and watchOS 7, all due to debut this fall.

Some of the new characters include a Chinese nesting doll, a tamale, a transgender symbol, bubble tea, a coronavirus-masked individual ninja, and a coin. Also on the list are gender-inclusive options, such as “Mx Claus,” a man with a veil, and a woman in a tuxedo. A bell pepper and flatbread are also among the new food emoji.

A full list of Unicode’s emoji additions, including previews, was published by Emojipedia back in January. While the new emoji were represented as glossy versions such as used by Apple. the final versions will likely be reproduced in a different style.
