HBO Now App Removed From Second and Third-Generation Apple TVs

As has been expected, HBO has removed its HBO Now app from second and third-generation Apple TV models over the weekend.

HBO had announced early in April that it would be dropping support for older Apple TV boxes at the end of April. The company said the decision was made “in order to provide the best streaming experience.”

When HBO Now Apple TV viewers pushed back on the announcement, HBO relented a bit, announcing that it would extend the deadline to May 15, with the hope affected users would have enough time to upgrade their Apple TV models or otherwise prepare for the service being dropped from older Apple TV units.

Affected users can still use AirPlay to stream HBO GO to their Apple TV from their iPhone or iPad, use an HDMI cable to connect a phone, tablet, or computer to their TV, or use Chromecast to cast to a TV from a phone, tablet, or computer to their TV. They can also purchase a new Apple TV or another streaming device like a Roku or Amazon Fire TV device.

HBO GO and HBO Now both remain available on newer Apple TV and Apple TV 4K streaming boxes.
